Standing In The Gap- Ever wondered what it truly means?
If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard or come across this term many times, thought of it as a ‘nice sounding’ phrase and then looked away and moved on with your routine.
“Settled into a routine yet?” is something many people asked us as a family, when we first moved to Bengaluru.
Now that’s the thing- while it does give a sense of comfort to get a routine going in our lives, sometimes the comfort of our routines can get in the way of us seeing the things God wants us to see, or be the instruments of grace and reconciliation He wants us to be, ‘cos that would mean a break in the routine, a step out of our zones.
If you happen to take a walk through your neighborhood (outside of your residential layouts), it’s not too difficult to see people living in slum like dwellings, just beside a multi storeyed multi towered residential project; or a malnourished mother carrying two toddlers on either hip, very close in age to each other – both looking equally malnourished; while another well to do mom carries her well dressed well nourished baby in a stroller – both walking along the same road; or churches filled with prayerful people at every turn, while young people hang around in those same gullies and streets emptying contents of a sachet into their mouths or walk around without purpose, wasting their youth- yes! The gap is real. Do you see the gap?
This gap exists right here where we stay, and right now in this time and season of our lives.
In Ezekiel 22:30, the Lord says ‘ And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.’
Today, God is looking for people to stand in the gap before Him for the land we are in.
Are you in?
If your answer is yes, then let’s delve into Scripture through this series to look at a few people who did stand in the gap in their times, and learn from their lives.
Let’s also pray for the grace to break from our routines and S.I.N.G.
